Sustainable Transformation from the Inside Out

Celebrate!
Hi everyone,

Whew! We got through the first part of the holidays! We are almost through one of the most stressful times of the year, and I hope you have navigated it with ease and self care and connected to what lights you up!

One of the things I've noticed in my yearly journeys is that there was always a huge stress buildup before Christmas, mostly fueled by some core, and often unconscious, beliefs of how I had to show up in order to be loved and accepted. Those expectations can take their toll on our self care. And as we approached the new year, I added lots self judgement for being imperfect over the holidays. And drawing up New Years resolutions that expected immediate perfection was a big setup for a guilt and shame cycle that opened the new year with a feeling of hopelessness. but on reflection, i know  I have always done my best, even if that didn't meet my somewhat unreasonable expectations. I've realized it's much more helpful to acknowledge and celebrate my best efforts.

In this moment, do a little tapping or havening and think about what worked for you this season. Celebrate your successes and ask yourself what if I could feel compassion for myself while I also see how I would like to change. Compassion provides us with a place where we can actually make change that sticks.

See you next week!

Lots of love,

Stress-Busting Tool #5:

Realistic Resolutions

Yikes!

It's Resolution Time!

Most of us are starting to formulate our new year's resolutions. Gotta hit the ground running January 1, well maybe on the 2nd.... so let's get organized!

Is there an undercurrent of self talk whispering (maybe yelling) in your head?
  • Responsible self: next week you'll have to get it together to do this......and that...., followed by.....
  • Holiday self: NOT even gonna think about that today! I can wait till next week, for now I'm gonna do whatever I want! I have to eat all those cookies so there are none here next week!
  • Doubting Self: we never do anything on this list so why not just give up!

This inner conversation goes round and round. For me it usually ends up with an ever increasing list of what I have to do to feel responsible and acceptable. And most of the items on the list are simply NOT necessary, or even possible. And I have thoughts like "if I can do all of those things every day, then I'll be happy (perfect)" (and might be able to escape self judgement).

Given the additional stress of the last few years, many of us are simply overwhelmed by uncertainty and too many responsibilities. So adding in a picture-perfect list of resolutions is not helpful, and can actually increase our stess and reduce our chances of making change that sticks. This is how we set ourselves up for a cycle of shame, guilt and self judgement. Because our resolutions are way TOO BIG to actually accomplish.

What's wrong with resolutions and why do we do this to ourselves year after year? Most resolutions come from the mistaken belief that we are somehow flawed, and are usually connected to guilt and shame. And they usually involve giving up something that we view as imperfect. Eating, drinking, smoking, shopping, binge-watching, not exercising, gaming.... you name it. We can always find something we feel guilty about. To achieve change, we need to find small steps that we can take consistently for the change to stick.

Resolutions simply don't stick if they come from a place of negative self judgement.

And change won't stick if the things we want to give up are actually helping us in some way. All of those activities I listed above, and many more can be ways that we deal with stress. When pressure gets unmanageable, we find ourselves doing those things we resolved to give up.

To chart a course for change, we need to acknowledge that our habits serve a purpose. If we can understand how these habits have helped us, then we can find something healthier to replace it. For example, if emotional eating helps reduce anxiety, then perhaps we can find other ways to do that. Like Tapping, Havening, having a walk or a bath.

When we ADD good things into our lives, they can reduce our desire for those things we want to give up. It's a journey, not a destination.

For this week, I invite you to find a few minutes to offer yourself some compassion and celebrate that you got through this year. Extend some gratitude to your habits for helping you get here. And as you move towards the new year, chunk down some of those BIG resolutions into small steps. Maybe walk 10 minutes a few times a week. Maybe add in some green veggies to your dinner plate. Start gently and nourish yourself with some gentle self compassion.

Join me in the new year to explore how we can make peace with our resolutions and chart a course for change that builds motivation and joy!
