The Light Returns
Hi everyone,

As the calendar turns ever closer to the holiday, I was reminded this morning of how easy it is to fall into that special Christmas anxiety that asks, among other things, 'have you done enough? what have you forgotten? how are you going to get through this? and you better get going!". Even though this year I have all the time I need to get ready and no impossible challenges, I woke up feeling the pressure of unreasonable expectations of what I should be doing and an assumption that I would never be satisfied with my efforts. Hm.... It seems that was just a lot of old old stuff from holiday seasons of the past that came up again. This season sure does remind us of our old triggers!

My day could have started off on a sour note, but I remembered the value of my (mostly) consistent daily practice. I realized I could start my day feeling more calm and peaceful . I have shared a few of the tools I find useful over the past few weeks, and this week I want to share another one called Self-havening that really helped me shift my mood this morning. I went from agitated and anxious to feeling comfort and joy!

We have just experienced the longest night here in the northern hemisphere, and we are drawing in and contemplating the past year and looking towards the newness of 2023. Many of us are needing some additional comfort as we wait for the light to return. Self-havening can bring that soothing comfort.

Stress-Busting Tool #4:

Self-Havening


Like Tapping and EFT, Havening Techniques® is effective and extensively-researched Energy Psychology tool, and a cousin of EFT/Tapping. Self-Havening is an easy to learn and effective self help tool, and can be done any time you need to calm down. It involves gently stroking three areas of the body:

  • the upper arms - shoulders to elbows
  • the face - like washing the forehead and cheeks
  • rubbing the palms of our hands together in a slight circular motion

These movements feel soothing to us, and send signals of safety and connection to the nervous system. Research shows that havening will change our brainwaves from stress (alpha waves) to calm (delta waves). This also reduces cortisol, and as we know, as cortisol clears, we have more space for the happy brain chemicals, serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin, amongst others. As we shift out of stress, new perspectives open up and sustainable change becomes possible.
